Former DGP SPS Rathore was stabbed by Utsav Sharma, a former student of National Institute of Design (NID), in Ahmedabad. Utsav Sharma stabbed Rathore when he was coming out of session court in Chnadigarh after filing appeal for bail in Ruchika molestation case. Utsav was standing towards Rathore car while waiting to stab him.

Rathore was stabbed 3 times on his face by Utsav, but did not get major enjury. Utsav was following Rathore for more than 2 months at both court and residence. Utsav was carrying a camera when he stabbed Rathore. Utsav also said that he is a freelance journalist and want to write book on Rathore. Rathore after stabbing was taken to hospital in Sector 16, Chandigarh and released after giving first aid.
